Abstract

Keywords: heritage, cultural landscape, World Heritage

The notion of heritage was particularly enriched in 1992 by the introduction of the concept of cultural landscapes by the World Heritage Committee into the Practical Guidelines for the Implementation of the Convention. It becomes the first text of international law to recognize and protect cultural landscapes as one of the categories in which cultural heritage can be classified. After more than two decades since its implementation, it is pertinent to query the evolution of the concept that has passed from a conception focused essentially on the landscape as a product, to another in which the landscape is perceived as a process.
The integrative and comprehensive character of the current concept of the Cultural Landscape incorporated within the qualification of the physical space: the social organization, the beliefs, the knowledge of the living cultures, and the feelings of identity and belonging proper to each society. In this sense, it can be understood as a rich record of the social history in a continuous evolution that follows the patterns of society’s behavior.
