The french gardening in Buenos Aires
Keywords:
Buenos Aires, XXth CenturyAbstract
Achille Duchêne (1866-1947) was the most renowned landscaper of the first half of the twentieth century, not only in France but in most of the West.
The Château de Voisins in Saint-Hilarion was built between 1903 and 1906 and was, probably, the first in a series of projects in which his work coincided with the architect René Sergent (1865-1927). In 1910, two projects were started in Buenos Aires that brought them together again: the Bosch-Alvear and Errázuriz-Alvear palaces. It is important to point out that neither of the two professionals was in Argentina at any time. For the garden of the first building, the French landscaper Carlos Thays (1849-1934) was in charge of this task. This article explores the academic and professional links within this group of remarkable personalities, placing them in the tradition of French gardening, focusing on the figure of Achille Duchêne and his project for the open areas of the Errázuriz-Alvear and Bosch-Alvear Palaces.
