Environmental history of architecture
Keywords:
environmental history, nature, architecture, modernizationAbstract
“Environmental history” is not a novelty. The current proliferation of historical literature on nature, environment, modernization, urban transformations, sustainability, infrastructure, and hygiene is sufficient evidence to assert that this is a contemporary topic of debate. However, the study of environmental history from the perspective of architecture—an integrative approach to architecture and its surroundings—remains an emerging field of study. Through a broad overview of the subject, this text analyzes different authors who have contributed to a deeper understanding of the interaction between architectural culture and nature, thus promoting critical reflection on human production in its environment over an extended period.
